Vaginosis is a result of an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the vagina. Your vagina has a natural population of bacterial. There are good bacteria and bad bacteria. In a healthy state, the two types of bacteria keep in other in check. If something triggers one bacteria to become dominant, that strain populates quickly and BV occurs.

A doctor will usually prescribe an antibiotic to kill the bacteria. One of the results of that treatment is that all bacteria are killed in the process. The good AND the bad bacteria are wiped out. That is the typical bacterial vaginosis remedy used by doctors.

What’s wrong with that? Initially, your symptoms go away because the bacteria is gone. No symptoms? That’s a good thing right? However, once the bacteria begin to repopulate in the vagina, a contest of sorts begins. Hopefully, both bacteria repopulate at a rate that keeps each other in check. That will lead to a healthy situation. But what happens if the bad bacteria gains an upper hand? That is exactly what causes recurrent BV. Unfortunately, all too often, the bacteria do not repopulate evenly, and the imbalance of good and bad bacteria happens all over again! If you go back to the doctor what will be prescribed? More antibiotics will be prescribed to kill the bacteria (all the bacteria) and the vicious cycle continues.

Are Antibiotics a Bad Thing?

Antibiotics are not “bad”. They are quite effective at killing the bacteria that are causing the symptoms of BV. However, as discussed above, both the good and the bad bacteria are killed. This is an effective treatment in the short term, but what about long term?

It’s a good thing to kill the bacteria, to stop the infection. Unfortunately there is no easy way to kill only the “bad” bacteria. What is needed is a way to achieve a balanced population of bacteria in the vagina (flora). The good and the bad bacteria must grow back “in balance” in order to remain BV free and symptom free for the long term. That is the key!

Need to Restore the Natural Vaginal Flora

Now, it may be possible to get rid of just by using home remedies (even using items you have around your house right now), but probably the most effective technique of treating BV is using a combination of some sort or antibiotic (could be garlic!). Use the antibiotic to kill the bacteria, and thus regain some sanity. Then, you can use home remedies to promote a balanced bacterial presence in the vagina.

It may require some trial and error to find which home remedies work best for your body.

Changes in Diet
